Design VS. SEO: Can My Site Look Good and Rank Well?

by: John Krycek

Do you have to sacrifice all of the creative and artistic elements of your web site to rank in the search engines? Later in this article I’ll show you a real case scenario and the design and SEO approach used.

Thanks to the birth of professional search engine marketers the top ranks are saturated with the pages of companies that can pay for such insight. That said, it’s certainly possible to employ high ranking tactics in your own website. Actually, the most basic tactics can move you up from an 800 position to a 300. However, it’s the top of the scale where efforts seem almost inversely exponential or logarithmic, you put a ton in to see a tiny change in rank.

Google’s Good Writing Content Filter

by: Joel Walsh

The web pages actually at the top of Google have only one thing clearly in common: good writing. Don’t let the usual SEO sacred cows and bugbears, such as PageRank, frames, and JavaScript, distract you from the importance of good content.

I was recently struck by the fact that the top-ranking web pages on Google are consistently much better written than the vast majority of what one reads on the web. Yet traditional SEO wisdom has little to say about good writing. Does Google, the world’s wealthiest media company, really only display web pages that meet arcane technical criteria? Does Google, like so many website owners, really get so caught up in the process of the algorithm that it misses the whole point?

Apparently not.
Most Common On-the-Page Website Content Success Factors
Whatever the technical mechanism, Google is doing a pretty good job of identifying websites with good content and rewarding them with high rankings.

I looked at Google’s top five pages for the five most searched-on keywords, as identified by WordTracker on June 27, 2005. Typically, the top five pages receive an overwhelming majority of the traffic delivered by Google.

PHP coding guidelines - Why are guidelines important?

First of all, let’s make one point crystal clear: it doesn’t matter what your guidelines are, so long as everyone understands and sticks to them. I’ve worked on a team where the person in charge preferred to put braces following the expression, rather than on a line all by themselves. Whilst I didn’t necessarily agree with this convention, I stuck to it because it made maintaining the whole project much easier.

It cannot be emphasised enough that guidelines are only useful if they are followed. It’s no use having a definitive set of coding guidelines for a joint programming project if everyone continues to write in their own style regardless. It is arguable that you can get away with different coding styles if every team member works on a different section which is encapsulated and therefore their coding style doesn’t affect the other developers. Unfortunately, this only holds true until a developer leaves and someone else has to take over their role.

Gaining in Google

Google tends to not rank new domains. In an effort to deter spammers from generating new websites, Google has implemented filters for new websites, which means that it can be a challenge for a new website to rank in Google’s organic search results until they are deemed trustworthy.

The Sandbox

Many websites are relegated to what is called “the sandbox” while Google makes a decision about what to do with them. It is strange to think that Google cares, as if Google has some sort of human attributes. Whether Google really cares or not is really not the point — the point is: there are factors that help Google discern whether a site should be relegated to the sandbox, or whether the site should appear in the organic search results. The factors are all part of Google’s algorithm to rank sites, with the ultimate goal being to provide searchers with the best possible search results. Here are some factors that influence whether a site is destined for the sandbox, or is able to join the party…

Get Comfortable with Personal Marketing

If you’re making marketing cold calls, the person on the other side of the phone isn’t thinking that this is anywhere near a personal type of call. To market more personally, you need to establish a familiarity quickly and cold calling is not usually the right way to go to get and maintain leads. Here are a few tactics to use that may help you avoid cold calling and that will give your marketing tactics a more personal feel:

Make appearances. Being holed up in a cubical making calls all day is not very much fun and isn’t exactly the most effective way to generate business. You need to get out in the world and show your face. For example, buy some booth space at a trade show and stock it with full color brochures that will be sure to catch people’s eyes. Or, if you don’t have the means, you can attend a trade show targeted toward the type of businesses or individuals that you want to sell to. Whatever industry you’re trying to sell to will have a trade show. Ask questions and pay attention what other companies are doing to grow their business. Jot down some notes either while you’re talking or right after so that you can follow up later. Don’t forget to get and give business cards.
